We got the chance to chat to Ryan from
Kids Can't Fly,
an awesome band from Southampton.
They have supported bands such as Zebrahead and The Misfits and have
big plans for the future...
Their unique style of music has been released on two cd's and
although they are currently working on some new stuff (which I for
one is definitely looking forward to!), if your a Twitter fan you
can keep track of how they are doing too.
Where is your favourite place to gig? Where do you think you get
the best crowd?
We've played quite a few venues around the UK and I think different
places have different charms, so we'll say a few different places
and why. Southampton, first and foremost is always an amazing crowd
as it's our hometown. It's the place we get to feel the rush of so
many people singing along and the crowd always have so much energy,
they put us to shame sometimes as we start to get tired towards the
end of the set!
In terms of favourite venue we've played, I think we'd all agree on
The Junction in Cambridge, it's such a nice stage to play on, with
amazing lights and amazing sound. It's impossible to play there
without thinking "whoa! this is awesome", plus so many people from
Cambridge keep asking us to come back, so we love it for that reason
too!
And last, but not least, we played London Astoria 2, which is
something that bands only dream of playing when starting out. We
were supporting Zebrahead and the crowd were fantastic, the buzz you
get just as you walk on stage is something that can't be described
and we can't wait to play there again one day.
Who in the band has the most annoying habit?
I'd probably have to say myself (Ryan). Basically, no matter how
excited or nervous I am, I never seem to show it, I'm not sure why,
but it seems to annoy people sometimes, so it's something I think I
need to get out of. I'm not sure anyone has a particularly bad habit
though, except for possibly a few too many bum burps from a couple
of members, but I think every band has that problem!
If someone in the band had to be labelled 'the geeky one' who
would it be?
This is a hard choice, we're all geeks in various ways. Firstly,
Dave our saxophonist used to be a bit of a video games geek, and
still loves them, although doesn't have as much time to play them
any more. I'd probably call myself a geek too, I'm interested in a
lot of geeky programs, magazines etc. and also went to a private
school, so I suppose I'd get that reputation. We all like to dress
up as geeks though and get our Napoleon Dynamite on in our favourite
clubs!
What do you have in store for your fans in 2009?
Well obviously we're half way through 2009 already and so far it
may seem to people we've been a little quiet, but it's all been in
preparation of what will be a huge explosion of awesomeness on
September 1st. We're looking to do a tour in October, hopefully in
support of a larger band if possible and are going to be hopefully
releasing a new EP, music video and loads more before the year's
over. We may also have a few more surprises up our sleeve, for
example, in August we will be playing horns for US rap-punks
Zebrahead on EVERY UK date they play, including Sonisphere Festival
(Metallica day), so that's got us pretty excited, and people can
look forward to even more in 2010, with a planned 5 week tour and
loads loads more!
If you could have 'Kids can't fly' on any type of merchandise
what would it be?
That's a hard question, I used to be in a band who had hot pants
and thongs with their logo on, which is pretty fun. The only problem
is, imagine if one of the single band members started to see a
lovely lady, and then one day, took her to bed only to discover she
was wearing Kids Can't Fly themed underwear! It might feel a little
strange.
Therefore, I'm going to have to say that we'd like KCF broadband
services, as we'd be able to provide slightly more interesting 'on
hold' music than any other service provider.
If you could tour anywhere in the world, where would you go?
Antarctica, although I'm not sure on the size of the crowds we'd
attract and we'd be at quite a risk of being attacked by...
penguins! On a more serious note though, we seem to have a
hell of a lot of fans in Canada, so would love to get to play a show
to them and we'd also love to tour Japan and possibly Australia. As
long as they lose some of the spiders!
Do you have anything to add?
Just really want to say a huge thank you to everyone who has come to
see us, bought a CD or even said hi. We play in a band not for the
fame or (lack of) money, we do it because we love making people
happier through playing music, it's so rewarding. We love it when
people chat to us and say hi and we're never going to be a band who
don't talk to their fans, so if you have Facebook, become a fan at
www.facebook.com/kidscantfly and post a comment to us so we
can chat to you. Thanks again everyone, and thanks for reading! xx
